Welcome To Our City

The City of Unalakleet was incorporated as a second-class city on October 22, 1974. Since incorporation, the City has developed and continues to develop infrastructure and utilities that advances the quality of life for our residents. The City encourages small business initiatives and serves as the base for large regional businesses as well.

Unalakleet / "Uŋalaqłiq" is a city in located at the mouth of the Unalakleet River, 148 miles southeast of Nome. There are about 750 residents living in Unalakleet year-round. It is known in the region and around Alaska for its salmon and king crab harvests; the residents rely heavily on caribou, ptarmigan, ugruk (bearded seal), and various salmon species.  Unalakleet is also known for its aesthetic value, as it is situated right on the Bering Sea, at the mouth of the pristine Unalakleet River, with trees, tundra, and the Nulato Hills.

Bering Strait School District Office is located in Unalakleet. Next to their offices is the Unalakleet School, the home of the WolfPack, which has preschool through 12th grade. When visiting our village, you will experience a selection of business, churches, local artists, restaurants, and unforgettable scenery. Unalakleet is a hub for the villages in the area. Bering Air operates out of Unalakleet and bring cargo and customers in and out on a daily basis.
